(So you can expect that the exact definition changes between a city and the other)

It's an elastic concept that reflects the elitism of the setting you are in. If they can leverage on your (lack of) power to have an edge on anything, they'll do.Īnd if this means calling you a Caitiff because there's any reason to call you that, they'll do it. Out of the character sheet, "Caitiff" is only an word that (like "thin blood") is used to define the bottom-feeders of the Kindred society.įor some Elders, for example, all the members of the bloodlines are Caitiff.įor others all the thin bloods are Caitiff too (and "thin blood" often depends on your generation, not really if your character is a thin blood). If you can tell your lineage, then you are identified as part of the clan,Īnd they can verify later if necessaryBut that's still dependent on the environment. If you can't tell your lineage, then they'll consider you caitiff (even if you're not) They're requirements when presenting yourself to the clan and identifying yourself as part of it, Those don't determine if you're caitiff or not, If most of Kindred think you're Caitiff, you are a Caitiff, and you have no say in the matter. These are Caitiff too, until they get enough power to make people afraid of calling them with that name. But then, we have Bloodlines, that are born basically from Caitiff that are able to propagate some kind of weirdness (included proprietary Disciplines, of course). OR you're Caitiff if you can't perfectly point out the whole line of your ancestor, name by name (or so said another Clanbook, probably the Ventrue one) A Clanbook (I don't remember which, probably the Brujah one) said that being Caitiff or not is about knowing the lore of your Clan. On the other end, many Caitiff are born from Brujah, Ventrue and Toreador that Embrace on the spur of the moment, sometime the Childe ends up a proper Kindred, mostly a Caitiff.

Not knowing you sire doesn't mean you are automatically a Caitiff, 'cause that's what the Gangrel usually do, and most of them end up Gangrel, not Caitiff. In-setting, a Caitiff depends widely from the environment. Game-wise, you are a Caitiff if that's what says your character sheet.
